The Masked Singer Scholarship

In the film and TV costume design program that I attended at FIDM, there was a scholarship opportunity for $5,000 creating our own MASKED SINGER design. The designer for the show, Marina Toybina, came to our school and presented us with her designs and the thought process behind them as well as her experience behind the scenes. During this interview I came up with the praying mantis design in my head, already inspired by these wonderful costumes she presented, I knew I should stick with the idea and run with it.

In the design process I knew that it should be both beautiful, colorful, and eye-catching to the audience and viewers watching at home, I thought of who might wear my design and the confidence they would exude when wearing it on the stage. Finding reference photos of actual praying mantises and the beautiful colors and nuances of each color running into the next was very inspiring. I knew I was on the right track, and put every effort I could to make these piece of art worth $5,000

It was such exciting news when I heard I was selected in the top five designs of my school, and even better news when I found out that I had won! This was definitely an experience to remember.
